Partnering with NYCHA and reinvesting in Brownsville with permanent affordable family housing
Through a competitive New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Request for Proposals (RFP), CHV was awarded the right to acquire and transform an underutilized NYCHA parking lot into sustainable, supportive, and affordable rental housing. The $56 public-private partnership offers 101 homes for formerly homeless and low-income families.
The Van Dyke development in Brownsville, Brooklyn provides tenants and the community with a beautiful and modern site to access high-quality amenities and CAMBA’s onsite supportive services. The development serves as a model for reusing underutilized public property for much-needed permanently affordable, workforce housing.
Van Dyke is a transit-oriented development with several sustainability features, including outdoor green spaces, healthy indoor air quality, high-efficiency building systems, high-efficiency faucets and fixtures, day-lit common areas, and energy-efficient windows. The construction and operations of Van Dyke have positively impacted the local economy, with more than 100 construction jobs created for Brooklyn residents, eight of which were residents of Community Board 16. The development created 10 permanent jobs, nearly $9 million in investments in local Brooklyn businesses, and $1.5 million in contracts to MWBEs. Beginning in 2015, CHV committed to a goal of 25 CAMBA hires for NYCHA residents over five years and well surpassed that goal with 130 hires by 2018.
